They’re fun, casual, and communal places to stay, relax, and meet fellow travelers.
Hostels are a form of accommodation that focus on bringing people together. They come in a range of shapes and sizes, from large hotel-like complexes, such as those found in big cities, to small cozy country houses, like ourselves.
Many hostels will offer both shared and private accommodations, and occasionally have apartment style units for rent. Some only take short-term guests staying a few nights, whereas others accept longer stays, of up to a few months.
In addition to a place to sleep, hostels also offer shared spaces to meet others. These can range from a communal lounge and dining room, to a games room or bar with live music. Hostels will also almost always have a kitchen for guests, with room and equipment to prepare your meals and store your food.
They are in no way similar, not even close, to the movie Hostel, Part I or II. If you see Eli Roth on your travels, tell him thanks for nothing.
They are also not a hospice, a halfway house, a home-stay, or a hotel.
They are not discriminatory to guests based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or age.
And finally, unlike in the past, they will not expect guests to work. Unless you’ve headed to a convent in Italy, in which case you better get sweeping.
The Skerwink Hostel is a cozy home away from home. We are a small hostel with 5 guest bedrooms and one volunteer dorm. Think of it like a vacation home away with friends you haven’t met yet!
All guest bedrooms are on the second level, and share a total of 3 bathrooms.
We provide lots of comfortable shared spaces for meeting other guests, including a large dining and lounge room. We offer weekly activities to get you out exploring the area, including nights at our local brewery, and community awareness days.
We also provide a delicious breakfast with homemade bread, spreads, and fresh fruit to get your day started right!
Newfoundland has a shortage of accommodation, and in peak season there is often nowhere left to stay on the whole peninsula. Do not leave it to chance!
Our private rooms book up very quickly, so definitely book as far in advance as possible. If you are unsure of your exact schedule speak with our office for suggestions of days, and driving times.
Dorm beds in our shared rooms are more flexible, however we often have large groups fill the hostel, so do not depend on a bed being free if you haven’t reserved ahead of time.
For more information don’t hesitate to contact our office.
Call us. We may have had a last minute cancellation and can now fit you in.
If we are full then we may be able to suggest any remaining availability in the area. In peak season most businesses will be fully booked, so having a list of spots to check is helpful in the hunt for a bed.
This is an important question to ask yourself before booking. If you are unsure about our different room options I encourage you to call our office.
Some things to consider when choosing your room:
How many people are in your group?
How comfortable are you in a room with strangers?

All HI-Canada hostels are regularly inspected for high standards of cleanliness, safety, environmental sustainability and available facilities.
The skerwink, spurwink, or skirwingle, are all old names for the bird the shearwater.
These medium sized seabirds frequent the coastal cliffs of the North Atlantic throughout the summer months, before making the long voyage to their breeding grounds in the Falkland Islands. Making them some of the furthest migrating birds.
They are also one of the longest lived, with the Manx Shearwater currently holding the record of oldest wild bird at 55 years.
Due to their presence along the ragged cliffs of our province, these birds have been the namesake for various coastal landmarks in Newfoundland, including our very own Skerwink Rocks, at the head of the Skerwink Trail. Or Spurwink Island located between Aquaforte and Port Kirwan along the East Coast Trail.
We love kids!
The Skerwink Hostel prides itself of being very family friendly. We have a large games cupboard with lots of fun toys and musical instruments to enjoy. A large selection of kids books. And a playground up the hill, with the best view to be found.
The shared facilities at the hostel make traveling with the whole family very easy. Our well equipped kitchen allows you to prepare your own meals whenever you want, and the large dining room ensures that everyone will get a seat.
The communal lounge room, and outdoor areas also means the kids have lots of space to enjoy themselves.
At the Skerwink Hostel we require that all children under the age of 15 sleep in a privately booked room. This means either in one of our private rooms, or in a larger dormitory that has been booked out for your group.
We have family rooms available that are perfect for a smaller family of up to 3 people, and our dormitory with private en-suite for larger families of up to 6 people. If traveling with an infant we have a crib available on site.
Hostels are great for all ages, and we are proud to have welcomed everyone from a 5-month old, to an 87-year old.
That being said, it is always important to consider accessibility when traveling with an older group. If your group is staying in our shared rooms and any of your party require bottom bunks, please let us know as early as possible.
If stairs are a problem for any of your group, we may not be the most comfortable option, as the hostel is based in a two-storey house, with all the guest bedrooms on the second level.
If you are unsure or have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We will always do our best to accommodation all guests, however if our facilities are not the best option for your group we are very happy to suggest alternative accommodations in the area.
Due to our shared facilities the Skerwink Hostel is unable to permit any animals that are not registered service animals.
If traveling with a service animal please let us know as early as possible so we may make any necessary arrangements.
If you are traveling with a non-service animal they are welcome to stay in your vehicle throughout your stay.
No problem. HI-C memberships are not required to stay at the Skerwink Hostel, however they can be purchased at our check-in desk, and a valid card will get you 10% off all room rates.
