When thinking about music in Newfoundland, a lot of people immediately start thinking of traditional music like that performed by bands such as The Irish Descendents, or Buddy Wasisname and The Other Fella.
But there are lots of great new bands in Newfoundland producing some really lovely songs. To catch you up on some of our favourites, I’ve put together a list of great tunes, by some truly great bands.
If you know any current Newfoundland bands, odds are it is these guys. From downtown St John’s, Hey Rosetta! can be found performing their beautiful and poetic tunes both on the island, and across Canada. Their gigs sell out quickly so be sure to buy tickets early!
Gary and Whit
This folk-duo comprised of husband and wife Gary and Whitney French, can be found at various festivals across Newfoundland throughout the summer. Their catchy melodies and soft harmonies ensure that you’ll be humming their songs for days!
This celebrated folk Trio are also regulars at both festivals and other venues across Newfoundland throughout the summer. They also regularly get off the island, both in Canada and the US.
Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case
Both as a solo artist, and as a collaborator with The Ambiguous Case, Sherman Downey produces great indie-folk music. He can be found across Newfoundland in the summer, as well as in various venues across Canada.
