The Skerwink Hostel is proud to announce that this year we will be introducing a Waste Reduction Plan in an effort to divert as much of our waste as possible away from landfill.
The Newfoundland environment is a precious resource that we hope to protect and preserve for many years and future generations.
Working alongside Hostelling International and the Newfoundland and Labrador Government’s waste reduction and diversion goals, we aim to cut our waste by 50% through the implementation of a larger and more comprehensive recycling program, through the repurposing of larger items, the review and assessment of our purchasing plans, and the application of new initiatives aimed to inform and empower both our guests and greater community.
REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
One of the largest goals in any waste reduction program is actively reducing what you put in the garbage.
At the hostel our goal is to reduce our waste by reviewing our purchasing plan to ensure we are purchasing only what is totally necessary. Assessing which cleaning products are actively used, and which containers we no longer need to purchase. Ensuring that wherever possible we are purchasing recycled products, and buying in bulk to reduce packaging.
Those who have stayed with us in the past will know we already have an active compost program for our garden. We plan to work on expanding this system to insure the greatest efficacy of our compost to continue collecting as much as possible. This will include adding paper and cardboard products to our compost where possible, and allowing the addition of citrus peels to the compost.
This season we will be working with the local weekly farmers market to provide produce for our guests to purchase on site at the hostel. Many vegetables are heavily packaged in unnecessary plastics and Styrofoam when buying from Newfoundland grocery stores. We hope this initiative will give guests the option to purchase local items that are not packaged therefore reducing the waste produced.
Finally our recycling program will be expanded to include a larger range of containers and papers and cardboard products that we are not able to reuse or repurpose throughout our property.
We are also working on collecting used tires from throughout our community and across our peninsula for future gardening and landscaping projects rather than purchasing new products wherever possible.
In addition to our new operation strategies the hostel will also be hosting events to promote waste and pollution reduction in the community.
In honour of World Environment Day we will be hosting a Skerwink Trail Clean-Up on May 31st.
The event will run from 12pm – 5pm, rain or shine. The more the merrier. We simply ask all to bring their own pair of sturdy garden gloves.
For more information have a look at our Facebook Event Page, and check back on the blog for more details.
We will also be hosting an event for this year’s World Waste Reduction Week from October 16th-22nd. Stay tuned for more details!
