Can you believe we are already one whole month into 2016? Where does the time go? It feels like just yesterday we were decorating the Christmas tree and singing merry carols.
Yet here we are, a full 31 days into 2016 already, 1 month down, and only 11 to go. With many reservations for the hostel already, and our volunteer team already taking shape for the coming season, before we know it June will be upon us! I mean; there are already icebergs on the coast! (More on those in another post.)
The year is moving so quickly that we are already at Ground Hog Day, this Tuesday February 2nd. According to Pennsylvanian folklore on this day the ground hog will awaken from their winter slumber and emerge from its burrow for the first time this year. Depending if the weather is sunny or cloudy the animal will determine if winter shall soon come to an end, or persist for another 6 weeks.
I’m not sure that I have great faith in the meteorological capabilities of the common ground hog, but I do like this day as a marker in the year, a day to reflect on the past few weeks, and think about the months to come.
I’m not sure if Bill Murray was aiming for motivational and inspiring with his 1993 film about a man stuck on and endless loop on Ground Hog day, but the concept of being able to have a second chance at something (or a third, forth, and fifth) until you get it right, is something we all hope for every once and a while.
So with this in mind I’ve decided to use Ground Hog day as my “second chance” at those New Years resolutions that turned out a bit harder to stick to than I had expected. I’m starting fresh, wiping the slate clean, and looking forward to the next 29 days of 2016.
I invite you to join me, and use this Ground Hog day to look back on the past four weeks and reflect on anything you would change. Have you succeeded in sticking to those New Year resolutions or have they been a bit harder to keep than anticipated?
Perhaps you didn’t make any resolutions this year, and maybe this week is a time when you can think of something in your life you would like to change. Maybe you’re keen to kick a long-term addiction, or looking for a career change.
Or perhaps you just want to schedule more time for yourself, to relax and enjoy the good things in life, like bad Bill Murray films, or watching icebergs float off the coast in Newfoundland.
Whatever it may be, know that we are right there with you!
