As the days grow shorter and the weather gets colder, though granted not quite as cold as we may like, we find ourselves feeling nonetheless Christmassy and ready to cozy up with our loved ones by a roaring fire. Or at least, I do. But what about you? What is it that gets you in the Christmas mood? What food, activity, and tunes get you into the Christmas spirit? To find out what makes people’s Christmas spirit shine, I asked some of our staff, both new and old, for a few of their favourite things.
So here are our favourite things about Christmas, and a fantastic Christmas soundtrack to accompany you on this festive ride:
What is you favourite Christmas food?
Dave (Canadian) : Chocolate for breakfast! It’s the only day of the year when I eat chocolate in the morning. It tastes like Christmas.
Gavin (Scotland, and maybe a wee bit German): Pigs in Blankets! Delicious cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon! Yum!
Libby (Australian): Croissants and fruit in the morning, though also chocolate throughout the day.
Brigid (Australian): I’m the same as Lib, croissants and fresh fruit for breakfast!
Sydney (Canadian): Peanut butter balls!
Camille (Canadian/Peruvian): Leftover turkey sandwiches, though Dave’s chocolate in the morning is a very close runner-up.
Kent (Canadian, and also one of our Christmas babies) : My birthday Cake! Whatever flavour it may be.
What is your favourite Christmas activity?
Libby: Puzzles in quiet times, and board games with everyone.
Gavin: Going to the Christmas market and having a Glühwein–mulled wine.
Brigid: Decorating the tree and singing carols.
Dave: Singing to the tree… and calling it by name. Mortimer.
Kent: Wandering downtown in St John’s on New Years Eve.
Sydney: Making peanut butter balls! And also opening up the days of the advent calendar!
Camille: I’m with Brigid, decorating the Christmas tree. With a glass of whiskey.
What is your favourite Christmas tune?
Libby: The hymn Jesus and the Apple. But also Carol of the Bells–the Home Alone version.
Gavin: There’s not one in particular, but probably Wizzard – I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day. Or Jona Lewie – Stop the Cavalry. Or Wham!
Brigid: Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song, or one of the classics like Away in a Manger.
Kent: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Dave: Ooh that’s a good one! For me it’s the Beatles – Christmas Time is Here Again, or a classic like Carol of the Bells is festively infectious.
Camille: Feliz Navidad. Because, of course!
We hope that we’ve got you well into the Yuletide spirit! And we wish you and your loved ones the happiest of tidings for this merry time of year.
There will be no blog post next week, but we will be back in 2016!
